Ambienti umidi effimeri e naturalità del paesaggio in Sicilia

I luoghi umidi temporanei sono ambienti acquatici che alternano periodicamente una fase d’invaso ed una fase secca ed ospitano espressive fitocenosi adattate a queste peculiari condizioni. Indagini condotte tra il 2003 ed il 2009 hanno consentito di individuare, in Sicilia, oltre 200 siti, costituiti generalmente da diverse pozze o piccoli stagni. L’estrema fragilità di questi habitat li rende molto vulnerabili a qualunque tipo di alterazione ambientale e pertanto risultano essere indicatori molto sensibili della pressione antropica sul territorio. Protection and conservation of the manna ash landscape in Sicily

Known as manna ashes, some local varieties of Fraxinus ornus L. and F. angustifolia Vahl (Oleaceae) are cultivated for extracting the manna, a product rich in mannose which is useful under both pharmaceutical and nutraceutical aspects. As wild plants in Sicily these ashes participate in diversifying evergreen and deciduous oak woods as well as other forest communities at the watercourse borders, together with several species of Salix, Populus and Ulmus, particularly in the hills. Cultivation of manna dates back to ancient times in Sicily and elsewhere and ash groves were increasingly spread up to the half of last century. Gli esiti raggiunti in due differenti Prin (2007 e 2009) e in alcune tesi laurea, consentono ad Andrea Sciascia di dimostrare, attraverso un bilancio dell'esperienza di ricerca e di didattica maturata, come il progetto di architettura, e quindi l'architettura, possa considersi come uno degli antidoti, ancora oggi, più efficaci al dilagante "consumo di suolo".
